Target participants

Secondary school students (Forms 3 to 5 students only). Each team consists of 4 students.

 

Description of the competition

The main purpose of this competition is to raise secondary school students’ understanding and interest in structural engineering through the design and build of a wooden tower subjected to both gravity and lateral loads. Hopefully, this competition can provide students with valuable experience and information in the selection of their future career and in their lifelong learning.

The model competition involves design, fabrication and testing of a tower structure. The tower will be placed on an inclined platform and subjected to a gravity load applied at the top. The model shall be assembled / fabricated with wood strips and glues provided by the organizer.

Regulations

1.        The model should be structurally stable and effective, aesthetic and innovation design will have additional reward.

2.        Team members are only allowed to use the materials provided by the organizer to build the model.

3.        The height of the tower must be higher than 700 mm. It is measured from the top of tower to the base of the tower (perpendicular to the baseboard). Models lower than this height limit will be disqualified.

4.        A 350 mm by 350 mm square baseboard is provided by the organizer. Students are required to build the tower on the baseboard.

5.        Any part of the tower must be contained inside the pre-defined site boundary of 250 mm by 250 mm at the centre of the baseboard (50mm margin on each side of the baseboard).

6.        A plastic box for holding the weights will be provided by the organizer. Students need to fix this plastic box at the top of the tower.

7.        The completed tower together with the baseboard will be fixed onto an inclined platform at 15 degrees angle to the horizontal plane (as shown in Figure 1) for the loading test.

8.        It must be pointed out that building an inclined tower to cancel or reduce the effects of the inclined platform is not allowed.

Certificates

An attendance certificate will be issued for each participant.

 

Prizes

Loading prizes: Champion ($3,000), First Runner-up ($2,000), Second Runner-up ($1,000),

Aesthetic and Innovative prize ($1,000) will be given to the team with the model has the highest grades on aesthetic and innovation

 

Judging Criteria

The competition is assessed by a judging panel to be assigned by the organizer. Judging panel shall comprise of engineers and academic staff. The judging panel reserves the right to make the final decision.

 

(1)                     Loading

Ten minutes will be given to each team for performing the loading test. If the model can bear the added weights for 10 seconds before failure (e.g., collapse of tower, falloff of the plastic box, slide of tower on the baseboard), the weight will be considered as an effective loading. The final effective loading will be recorded when time is up. The team with the highest effective loading is the winner. The judging panel reserves the right to define failure during the loading test.

 

(2)                     Aesthetic and Innovative

The judging panel will assess the aesthetic and innovation of the fabricated tower and rank the model based on the aesthetic outlook, creative development and special design. The aesthetic and innovative prize will be given to the team with the highest rank.
